Eagles Golfers Finish 3rd At Cardinal Intercollegiate
Simpsonville, Ky. -- The Southern Miss men's golf team slipped to a nine-over-par 297 team total in today's final round of the Cardinal Intercollegiate Tournament at The Cardinal Club here, and dropped one place to third, with an 867 total, 12 shots off the pace set by South Alabama.
South Alabama shot a final round one-under-par 287, to finish at nine-under-par 855, four strokes better than Coastal Carolina. The Jaguars led by two strokes after Monday's first two rounds, and extended that margin to four strokes. Coastal Carolina used its 297 team total to move into second place, after ending first-day play in a third place tie with Rhode Island.
USA's Ryan Gildersleeve, who led after two rounds at eight-under-par 136, shot a 71 today and VCU's Wm. Ted Brown, who was a shot off the pace yesterday, carded a 70 to force a playoff for medalist honors. Seven playoff holes failed to produce a winner and the two were declared co-medalists.
Southern Miss put two players in the top-20 players. Justin Emil (70-73-74--217) and Danny Dennis (69-74-74--217) tied for 17th place. Other Golden Eagle finishes included Matt Wofford (71-71-76--218) who tied for 22nd, Michael Soroka (72-71-77--220) who finished in a tie for 28th and Justin Elliott (79-73-73--225) who finished in a tie for 45th and with the best Southern Miss round of the day.
Southern Miss will continue its busy fall schedule, playing in the Hillman Robbins Memorial Tournament Oct. 6-8, at the Big Creek Golf Club in Memphis, Tenn., in an event hosted by the University of Memphis.
