DePaul Outscores Southern Miss, 100-72
Southern Miss drops its second-straight game, losing to DePaul 100-72. Southern Miss dropped to 9-11 and 2-5, while DePaul improved to 13-7 and a league-leading 6-1.
Southern Miss placed four players in double-figures with Tierra Lassiter leading the way with 15 points, La'Tasha Sumerall had 13, Victoria Mason scored 12 and Marlena Lee chipped in 11. DePaul's Lenae Williams led all scorers with 31 points to pace five players in double-figures. Yolanda Lewis scored 18 points, Jenni Dant had 15, Claudette Towers had 11 and Sarah Kustok added 10.
"This is conference play and we have to learn how to be physical," Head Coach Rick Reeves said. "I told our players at the half that we needed to be more physical and we need to play clean. We came out the second half and played with more aggression and we started to take the ball to the basket strong."
Southern Miss finished the game shooting an impressive 50 percent from the field after shooting only 33 percent in the first half. DePaul finished the game shooting 54 percent and outrebounding Southern Miss by one, 33-32. The Lady Eagles did have 25 turnovers.
"We have our backs against the wall and now we have to fight to get back on track," Reeves said. "We get to play five out of last seven games at home and we need to take advantage of that."
Southern Miss outscored the Blue Demons 49-45 in the second half, shooting 64 percent and only eight turnovers. This is the first time since 1996 that a Southern Miss team has allowed 100 points.
Southern Miss returns to action, Feb. 1, when the Lady Eagles host Louisville in a 7 p.m. tipoff.
