Southern Miss Loses to Memphis, 65-55
Southern Miss lost for the third time in 2002, losing to Memphis, 65-55, in Conference USA action Sunday.
The loss dropped Southern Miss to 7-9 and 0-3 in the conference, while Memphis improved to 8-8 and 2-1.
La?Tasha Sumerall led Southern Miss with 18 points. Memphis placed four players in double-
figures with Melissa Abraham leading the way with 18 points followed by Shannon Hamp and Raven Rogers with 11 points, each, and Lauren Jackson adding 10.
"We adjusted to the physical play in the second half," Head Coach Rick Reeves said. "La'Tasha came out the second half and was ready to play. She got a little tired the first half, and I told our kids, we just need to play through it."
The game was tied 2-2 after a possession by each team, then Memphis went on a 9-0 run to take an 11-2 lead at the 15:56 mark. Southern Miss then answered with a 10-6 run to cut Memphis? lead to five, 17-12, with just under 13 minutes remaining in the half.
Memphis continued its up-tempo pace and outscored Southern Miss 12-2to take a 15-point lead, 29-14. Memphis continued to build on its lead and finished the first half leading, 43-20.
Memphis opened the second half with a 6-1 run for its largest lead of the game, 49-21, with 16:51 remaining. Southern Miss began to chip away at the lead, running off six unanswered points. The Eagles continued to battled back over the a 13-minute span with a 26-12 run to get the score under double-digits, 62-53, with 1:26 remaining and that was as close as the Lady Eagles would get.
Southern Miss finished the game shooting 32.3 percent, but had 28 turnovers in the game. Memphis held the rebounding edge, 45-40, and shot 40.3 percent from the field.
Southern Miss plays for the first time in the month of January at home against South Florida,
Thursday night, in a televised game. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
