Lady Eagles Come Up Short to Louisville in Overtime
LOUISVILLE, Ky. ? It took overtime to decide Sunday's match between Southern Miss and Louisville, but in the end, it was the Cardinals who emerged victorious with a 3-2 victory.
Louisville's Amber Jolley scored on a breakaway goal off an assist by Cardinal goalkeeper Meredith Miller in the third minute of the first overtime to seal the win for Louisville (2-4, 1-1 in C-USA), and hand the Lady Eagles its second loss in as many Conference USA matches.
Southern Miss (5-2, 0-2) allowed just five shots-on-goal, while firing 11 in the match.
After an offense-filled first half, both teams dueled in a scoreless second half before sending the match into overtime.
In the first half, the Lady Eagles got out of the gates first as junior forward Tricia Wiles found the back of the net on an indirect kick in the 14th minute.
However, the Cardinals answered to tie the game, 1-1, in the 19th minute as Melissa Wark rebounded Mandy Rost's shot off Southern Miss sophomore goalkeeper Leslie Schoeplein. Louisville took the lead 10 minutes later as Rost converted on Elizabeth Bradstreet's assist.
The Lady Eagles countered in the 30th minute as Katie Adams scored a header off Wiles' corner kick, knotting the score, 2-2.
Anna Snyder, seeing her first action of the season in goal, took the loss. Snyder subbed for starter Schoeplein, who left the game prior to the second half with a back injury.
Southern Miss returns to action for its first C-USA home weekend, Friday, against Charlotte at 4 p.m., and on Sunday against East Carolina at 1 p.m. Both matches will be played at the USM Track and Soccer Complex.
