Southern Miss blanks Huntsville, 4-0
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? After winning its exhibition opener, the Southern Miss women's soccer team added another exhibition win with a 4-0 victory over the Huntsville Kicks, Sunday, at the Marshall Bell Track and Soccer Complex.
The Lady Eagles outshot the Kicks, 32-6, and four different Southern Miss players netted goals in the win.
"We played much better today," Southern Miss Head Coach Matt Clark said. "We stepped up our level of play. We were holding the ball longer, and that let us spread out our attack."
The Lady Eagles got on the board first when Lauren Prewitt found the back of the net in the 10th minute of play. Southern Miss reeled off seven shots on goal in the half, but could only convert on one of them.
In the second half, Tricia Wiles, who had two goals in the 3-0 win over the Alabama Attack on Saturday, scored on a penalty kick in the 47th minute to put the Lady Eagles ahead, 2-0. In the 62nd minute, Lindsay Canham's shot soared past the outstretched hands of the Kicks' Jessica Marek, pushing the score to 3-0. Claire Rea added the team's final goal, with her shot in the 73rd minute.
Wiles led the team with two assists, while Canham and Rea also had assists.
Southern Miss opens regular-season play against Middle Tennessee State in the Golden Eagle Soccer Classic, August 31. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m., at the Marshall Bell Track and Soccer Complex.
