Southern Miss Defeats UAB, 12-1
Hattiesburg, Miss. -- Southern Miss' Michael Artman finished with four hits and drove in five runs, Rusty McDaniels had three hits and two runs batted in, and Ben Mosley collected two hits and drove in three runs to lead the Golden Eagles to a 12-1 victory over UAB, today, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field in the second game of the weekend Conference USA series.
The win today extends Southern Miss' winning streak to three games, marking the first time the Golden Eagles (24-30, 10-16) have won three in a row since their nine-game winning streak that started on Feb. 16 against Louisiana-Lafayette and ended on March 4 at Ole Miss.
With the victory today, Southern Miss also can do no worse than tie for seventh place with either Charlotte or Saint Louis. The Golden Eagles won 2-of-3 with both clubs so they would own the tie breakers and thus hold down the seventh place spot going into the Conference USA Tournanent at Zephyr Field in New Orleans, La., on May 16-20.
Southern Miss scored 12 runs on 15 hits, while UAB (25-29, 6-20) scored one run on nine hits and committed one error. The Golden Eagles stranded 10 runners on base, while the Blazers left seven on the base paths.
Daniel Stewart (5-5) earned his fifth victory of the season and second conference victory in a row. He pitched five innings, giving up six hits and striking out two. Stephen Castleman picked up his fifth save of the season, pitching the final four innings, giving up one run on three hits, walking two and striking out three.
The Golden Eagles exploded for three runs in the second inning and added five more in the third, taking the early 8-0 lead. Southern Miss tacked on another run in the fourth and three more in the eighth, collecting their 12th run, the final outcome. UAB scored its run in the seventh inning.
Dusty Haley walked and stole second to lead of the second inning. After Chris Dunn struck out, Bobby Garner walked to put runners on first and second. Clint Stoy flew out to center advancing Haley to third and Garner moved to second on a wild pitch. McDaniels singled up the middle, scoring Haley from third and moving Garner to third. Ben Mosley was hit by a pitch to load the bases, before Artman unleashed a single to right field, scoring both Garner and McDaniels and advancing Mosley to third. After Artman stole second, Allen Winningham flew out to right field, ending the inning.
Jeff Cook and Haley walked to lead off the inning. Dunn reached on an error to short, scoring Cook and moving Haley to third. After Stoy walked to load the bases, McDaniels hit his single of the game to right field, scoring Haley and moving everyone else up a base. Mosley flew out to right, scoring Dunn from third and moving Stoy to third. After McDaniels stole second putting runner on second and third, Artman singled to center, plating Stoy from third and McDaniels from second. After Winningham singled to center, pushing Artman to third, Cook lined out to short to end the inning.
Dunn hit a one-out double in the fourth and advanced to third on Garner's single through the left side, putting runners on the corners. Stoy singled up the middle, scoring Dunn. McDaniels reached on a fielder's choice to short and Mosley grounded out to end the inning.
UAB's Mark Garner led off the inning with a single to left field, and pinch hitter Lee Jolly hit an infield single to short, putting runners on first and second. With one out in the inning, Mitch Jones grounded out to the pitcher, moving Garner to third and Jolly to second. Keith Barnes walked to load the bases before Brandon Holmes singled through the right side, scoring Garner. Christian Reimers flew out to left to end the inning.
Southern Miss pinch hitter Brent Quinn led off the eighth with a single to center. After Brad Montgomery struck out, Stoy singled up the middle, advancing Quinn to second. McDaniels flew out to left field for the second out of the inning. Mosley cleared the bases with a double to right center, plating both Quinn and Stoy. Artman collected his fourth hit of the day with a single to left, driving in Mosley from second. Winningham lined out to center field, ending the inning.
UAB starting pitcher Andre Parks (5-1) dropped his first decision of the year, pitching two innings, giving up four runs on two hits, walking three and striking out two. Jon Burgett came on in relief in the third inning, Clay Bush replaced Burgett in the same inning and then Adam Wood came on in relief in the third and pitched 4.1 innings. He gave up one run on six hits and struck out three. Joe McRae finished the game, pitching the eighth inning, giving up three runs on four hits and striking out one.
UAB and Southern Miss play the final game of the three-game Conference USA weekend series on Sunday, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field, at 1 p.m. Prior the start, the Golden Eagles will honor senior Thomas Greene (manager), Michael Artman, Dusty Haley, Ben Mosley, Brent Quinn and Chad Rogers.
