Lady Eagles Fall In Opening Round Of C-USA Tourney
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - All the top seeds advanced to the quarterfinals of the winners
bracket in the opening round of the Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship in
Hattiesbsurg, Thursday.
In the morning matches, No. 5 seed Houston defeated No. 12 seed Charlotte, 4-0.
Houston started the match, sweeping the doubles to earn the doubles' point. The Lady
Cougars then won the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 6 singles to win the match.
Eighth-seed Memphis defeated No. 9 seed Saint Louis, 4-0. Memphis took the
doubles' point, winning at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The Lady Tigers followed with wins at
No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 singles to win the match.
In the afternoon action, No. 6 seed Cincinnati defeated No. 11 seed and host Southern
Miss, 4-0. Cincinnati started the match, winning the doubles' point with wins at No. 1 and
No. 3 doubles. Cincinnati won at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 singles to win the match.
Seventh-seed DePaul knocked off No. 10 seed Louisville, winning 4-1. After losing at
No. 1 doubles, DePaul bounced back to take the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles' matches to earn
the doubles' point. Louisville took a match in the singles, winning the No. 3 singles, before
DePaul won at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 singles to take the match.
In Friday matches, Houston plays No. 4 seed Marquette at 9 a.m., at Tatum Park, while
Memphis plays top seed UAB at the Racquet Club. Cincinnati plays No. 3 seed South
Florida at noon, at Tatum Park, and DePaul faces No. 2 seed Tulane at the Racquet Club.
In the back-draw, Saint Louis plays Charlotte at 3 p.m., at Tatum Park, and Southern
Miss plays Louisville at the Racquet Club.
