Southern Miss Lady Eagles Fall to Grambling State, 61-43
The Southern Miss Lady Eagles scored only 16 second half points on 5-of-23 shooting for 21.7 percent, falling to Grambling State 61-43. The Lady Eagles dropped to 4-4 on the season while Grambling improved to 3-5.
Victoria Mason led Southern Miss with 11 points, 10 coming in the first half. LaKandra Davis led Grambling State with 18 points, followed by Scherwanda Boston with 14, Chovanique Kibble had 13 points and Shrieka Evans added 10 points.
"I was very disappointed in the way we played today," Head Coach Rick Reeves said. "We knew they were going to press, and I thought we were prepared for it. We didn't handle the pressure well."
Southern Miss had 28 turnovers for the game, including 17 in the second half. Grambling opened the second half 16-2 run to take a 46-29 lead with just over 14 minutes remaining in the game. Southern Miss then scored eight unanswered points to get the lead under double-digits, 46-37, at the 8:26 mark. Grambling then went on a 9-0 run and led 55-37, with 3:51 remaining. The Tigers closed out the half on a 9-2 run.
Southern Miss opened the game with an 8-2 lead early, but Grambling went on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 8-8. Southern Miss then went on a 7-2 run to take a 17-10 lead with 12:33 remaining before the half. Grambling went into its full court press and forced the Lady Eagles into several turnovers to get back into the game, reeling off nine straight points to take a 19-17 lead. Both teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half. The Golden Eagles trailed 29-27 at the half.
Southern Miss returns to action, Sunday, Dec. 16, when the Lady Eagles travel to Lubbock, Texas., to play nationally ranked Texas Tech. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
