Southern Miss Falls to Nationally Ranked Texas Tech, 95-34
Texas Tech opened the game, scoring the first 23 points, and cruised to a 95-34, victory over the Southern Miss Lady Eagles, Sunday afternoon. Southern Miss falls to 4-5 while Texas Tech improves to 5-2.
Southern Miss did not have a single player score in double-figures, but Sonja Brown led the Lady Eagles with eight points and Lana Lewis added seven. Texas Tech placed three players in double-figures led by Casey Jackson with a game-high 19 points, followed by Amber Tarr with 16 and Jia Perkins added 14 points.
"First, I would like to commend Marsha Sharp and her staff for creating such a great atmosphere for women's basketball," Head Coach Rick Reeves said. "This was a good environment to be in; unfortunately, we didn't play well today. I think our kids were intimated with this great crowd."
Southern Miss scored its lowest point total of the season with the 34 points that tied a record. However, the 61-point loss was not the worst defeat for a Southern Miss. Delta State defeated Southern Miss 111-44 in 1976. Southern Miss finished the game shooting a dismal 19.3 percent, the lowest field goal percentage by a Lady Eagle team.
"We are continuing to struggle with our point-guard situation," Reeves said. "We are going to go back and maybe simplify some things to get us going. We just need to take better care of the basketball, and have better shot selections. All of our problems can be corrected, and we are going to go back and work hard to correct our mistakes."
Texas Tech took advantage of 22 Lady Eagle turnovers and scored 30 points off those miscues. The Lady Raiders also got 38 points in the paint while the Lady Eagles scored 14 points.
Southern Miss returns to action, Wednesday, Dec. 19, when the Lady Eagles host intra-state rival Jackson State at 7 p.m.
