Eagles Host Alcorn State
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss (1-2) tries to rebound from a pair of losses last weekend in the Hispanic College Fund Classic in Albuquerque, N.M., when the Golden Eagles host intrastate rival Alcorn State in a 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 26, game at Green Coliseum.
The Eagles lost to West Virginia, 66-59, in first round action and to Pacific, 65-50, in the consolation game.
Southern Miss put together a solid performance in the West Virginia game and was in the game until the closing seconds. Senior forward Elvin Mims picked up a game-high 16 rebounds to go with 11 points. Clement Carter led the Eagles with 14 points, and Ben Lambert had 13.
Southern Miss outrebounded the Mountaineers, 43-26, but also committed 25 turnovers and shot just .386 (22-57) from the floor and hit 10-of-16 from the line (.625).
In the consolation game, the Eagles shot an identical .386 from the floor (17-44) but again had turnover problems, with 17, and saw Pacific shooters connect on 24-of-47 (.511) from the floor. Mims led Southern Miss with 15 points, while Carter added 12.
Southern Miss and Alcorn have met just five times previous to tonight's game. Alcorn won the first meeting, 77-71 in 1979, and the Golden Eagles have won the other four. That includes last year's 88-62 victory here in Green Coliseum.
In that game, Southern Miss ran out to a 40-17 halftime lead and was not threatened in the second half. The Golden Eagles put four players in double figures, led by Carl Henderson, who had 15. David Wall added 15 points, Vandarel Jones 12 and Brad Richardson 10. Southern Miss hit 31-of-60 from the floor in the game while limiting the Braves to 24-of-55 (.436) shooting.
Forward Marcus Fleming, who is back this season, led all scorers with 20 for the Braves. He also led his team with eight rebounds.
Alcorn is 1-1, with an 82-72 loss at New Mexico and an 82-70 win over Tougaloo.
Walter Harper leads the Braves in scoring at 15-points a game. Fleming is at 13.5 points a game and two other Braves, Lee Cook and Jeff Cammon, also are averaging double digits. Mims tops Southern Miss scorers at 13.3-points a game. Carter is at 12.3 points a game, and Brad Richardson is averaging 12.0. Mims and Carter are averaging 8.0 rebounds a game to lead the Eagles in that department.
Following the Alcorn game, Southern Miss will play at Arkansas State on Dec. 1.
