Southern Miss Inks Second Baseball Recruit of Early Signing Period
"Ryan is a three-tool guy, who I believe will come in and help us," Palmer said. "He is a true rightfielder who has a good arm, good speed and can hit for power. You always look for an outstanding athlete to fit the bill in right field, and Ryan will have a great opportunity to make an impact here at Southern Miss."
Last year as a freshman at Bossier CC, he hit .350 for Coach Jay Artigues. During the last two summers, he was a member of the Louisiana All-Stars, hitting .370 with eight doubles, four triples, six home runs and 32 RBIs in 2001. He had a slugging percentage of .686 and an on-base percentage of .440. He was selected to the all-tournament team at the AAU National
World Series in 2000.
He was a three-year letterwinner for Coach Dru Nettles at Woodlawn High School, finishing with a .360 batting average, hit 12 home runs, drove in 70 runs and had 30 doubles over his career. He was an all-state selection as a senior and a three-time all-district honoree. He helped lead Woodlawn to an appearance in the state championship game as a junior and was selected to play in the 2000 state all-star game as a senior.
Frith, a native of Baton Rouge, La., is the son of Randall and Kathleen Frith.
Southern Miss finished the 2001 season with a 27-32 record but advanced to the semifinals of the FedEx Conference USA Baseball Tournament. The Golden Eagles return four position starters and three starting pitchers and add 11 newcomers to this year's roster. USM opens its 2002 season with a three-game series against Lipscomb University on Feb. 15-17, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
