Houston Beats Lady Eagles Volleyball, 3-1
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The Southern Miss volleyball team gave Houston an early battle, but the Cougars came back to win, 3-1. The Lady Eagles started with winning game one, but Houston poured on the power in the final games.
Jennifer Wittenburg recorded 27 kills for Houston (12-9, 9-3 in Conference USA). She completed the double-double with 10 digs, while sitting out game one and playing in the final three games. Gabi Carbone added 21 digs, and Jenny Tanneberger finished with 15 kills.
Kelly Tribble produced a double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs for Southern Miss (7-17, 2-11). Andrea Bush claimed 10 kills, and Brynn Olsson and Nicki Tribble had 10 digs apiece.
The Cougars started game four with a commanding 23-11 lead. The Lady Eagles battled back with a 9-1 run to pull within four, 20-24, but Houston held on to win the match, 30-25.
The Cougars controlled game three, winning 30-17. Houston owned a 8-1 lead, and USM never came with 12 down the stretch. Wittenburg recorded seven kills, as the Cougars outhit the Lady Eagles in percentage, .486 to .136.
Houston tied up the match with a 30-25 win in game two. After leading early at 2-1, Southern Miss owned the lead until the Cougars made a comeback, taking control at 19-18. Southern Miss battled and exchanged the lead on two service opportunities, but Houston took over at 23-22, and never relinquished the advantage.
Wittenburg powered over 11 kills in the second game to lead the Cougars. Kelly Tribble led the Lady Eagles with six kills.
Game one featured a tight battle, finishing in favor of the Lady Eagles, 30-25. Southern Miss gained the lead at 9-8, and never looked back.
Kelly Tribble put on the heat with four aces on one service opportunity, building the lead to 13-8. She recorded four kills in the game. Tenneberger produced five kills to lead the Cougars.
Southern Miss looks to end its 10-match losing streak, hosting TCU tomorrow evening, Saturday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m., in the Payne Center.
