Melynda Newsom was named a Learning Specialist at Southern Miss in August of 2019.
Her responsibilities as a Learning Specialist include assisting students in being successful academically.
She graduated with her Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Southern Miss in 1989, and earned her Mississippi Department of Education Teaching License in 2013.
Prior to Southern Miss, she worked in the Lamar County School District from 2013-2019 as an eighth grade math teacher. Before that, she was a computer programmer for IBM from 1989-1996.
Newsome is married to Joey, also a Southern Miss graduate (1987). The two live in Sumrall and have three kids, Brent, Jeremy and Madison. The entire Newsom family are proud graduates of Southern Miss.
