Michael Gibbs begins his first season at Southern Miss as an offensive graduate assistant coach after spending the last three years in the same capacity at Arkansas State.
In his first season at A-State, Gibbs helped lead the Red Wolves to an 8-5 overall record, a Sun Belt Conference championship with a 7-1 league record and a 31-13 victory over UCF?in the 2016 Cure Bowl. Gibbs and A-State followed up the 2016 season by making another bowl-game appearance the following year, this time playing in the Camellia Bowl to conclude a 2017 campaign that saw the offense average a school-record 494.8 yards per game that ranked No. 10 in the nation.
Gibbs helped coach an offensive line in 2017 that ranked fifth in the nation in passing offense (342.2 yards per game), 10th in total offense (494.8 yards per game) and 13th in scoring offense (37.8 points per game). A-State's average total offense was also a school record, while its 454 points scored tied the fourth most in school history. Gibbs assisted with an offensive line unit that helped produce over 400 yards of total offense in 10 of 12 games, including a school and Sun Belt Conference-record 781 yards in a victory over Louisiana-Monroe.
The 2018 season saw the Red Wolves rank 17th in the nation in total offense with 466.2 yards per game and 21st in passing offense with 281.5 yards per game that finished 8-5 with an appearance in the Arizona Bowl. Gibbs helped tackle Lanard Bonner earn First Team All-Sun Belt Conference honors for the second year in a row while center Jacob Still garnered Honorable Mention All-Sun Belt recognition for the second-straight season.
Gibbs served as East Side High School's (Cleveland, Miss.) offensive line coach in 2015, but before that was a two-year football letterman at Delta State in 2013 and 2014.
During his senior season with the Statesmen, Gibbs was named First Team All-American, All-Gulf South Conference and All-Super Region. He started all 21 of his career games at Delta State, ending his senior campaign with 36 knockdown blocks.
Prior to joining Delta State, Gibbs played for head coach Gene Murphy at Hinds Community College (Raymond, Miss.), earning a spot in the MACJC All-Star Game.
The Brandon, Miss., native earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from Delta State University in May of 2016. He was an academic all-conference selection and a member of the dean's list.
Gibbs accumulated numerous accolades at Northwest Rankin High School (Flowood, Miss.), including first team all-metro and all-district and second team-all state honors.
