Southern Miss Football Entertains UConn Saturday in Non-Conference Action

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss football team plays a first-time opponent when they welcome UConn to the Magnolia State for a 6 p.m., contest Saturday at Renasant Stadium.
The game can be seen via ESPN+, as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network or through SouthernMiss.com.
The Golden Eagles (1-1) look to rebound from a 43-8 setback at Auburn last weekend. The game against UConn is the first meeting of a home-and-home series. Southern Miss will travel to Storrs on Nov. 3, 2029.
The Huskies (1-1) opened their season with a 56-7 home victory over Lafayette, before dropping a 38-14 decision in Storrs against Maryland. The Huskies are under first-year coach Jason Candle, who led Toledo to 81 victories over 10 seasons before taking over at UConn this fall.
Through the first two games, the Golden Eagles average 28.5 points per contest and 382 yards of total offense per game.
On the ground, Steven Robinson leads the squad with 174 rushing yards, leading the team in both of its first two games of 2026, while Ethan Hampton has thrown for 326 yards on 31-of-50 passes and a pair of touchdowns. His top target has been Mario Sanders, who leads the team in both catches (9) and receiving yards (152) with one touchdown reception.
On defense, Laquan Robinson leads the way with 17 tackles, followed by Mathis Haygood, who has totaled 15. Haygood also is tops on the squad with tackles for loss with 2.5. Through two games, the Golden Eagles enjoy six takeaways from their opponents with Kobi Albert having four of those, including three interceptions and a fumble recovery.
Husky quarterback Kalieb Osborne leads his team in both rushing (120) and passing (421) yards as he has converted 29-of-47 throws with four touchdowns and one interception. His top target has been Javon Brown, who has registered six catches for 92 yards and a score.
Zion Paret leads the UConn defense with 15 tackles, while K'Von Sherman ranks second with 14.
The Huskies are one of two independent squads of the 138 FBS schools and the first one the Golden Eagles have met since opening the year in 2022 against Liberty, who has since joined Conference USA. The only other FBS independent program in the country is Notre Dame.
