Southern Miss Softball Heads to Starkville to play No. 19 Mississippi State

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss hits the road, following the Black and Gold Challenge on opening weekend, to play No. 19 Mississippi State in Starkville at Nusz Park Feb. 10 at 4:00 p.m.
The Golden Eagles won four of five games over opening weekend, dropping only one in extra innings to Louisiana Tech. Through the weekend, Southern Miss leads the country in sacrifice flies (8), leading the Sun Belt in double plays and third in the nation. The Golden Eagles lead the Sun Belt in walks (28).
With Kayla Giardina's complete game shutout on Feb. 6, she joins only 49 other pitchers to lead the NCAA in complete games. In addition, she also is a part of 148 other qualified pitchers with a 0.00 ERA. Nealy McManus is ranked 23rd overall and first in the conference with 9 RBIs. McManus and Maddison Johnson are both ranked 18th in the country with one triple a piece.
No. 19 Mississippi State, according to D1 Softball.com, is 4-0 after run-ruling Baylor 10-0 through five innings going on to beat Northwestern State, Wichita State, in extra innings, and New Mexico. Alyssa Faircloth picked up 14 strikeouts in the matchup against New Mexico ranking her eight in the nation per seven innings.
The history between the two programs has Mississippi State leading the matchup 20-4 with Southern Miss prevailing in 2022 with a 3-0 victory.
