HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss (12-11, 5-7 Sun Belt) heads north to take on Toledo (11-9, 6-4 Sun Belt) in round two of the MAC-SBC Challenge. The Lady Eagles are one of 13 Sun Belt members hitting the road to take on the Mid-American Conference this weekend. Southern Miss is 3-2 all-time in the cross-conference clash and looks for its first win on the road against a MAC opponent. Tipoff for the first-ever meeting between Southern Miss and Toledo is set for 2 p.m. ET (1 p.m. CT) at the Rockets' John F. Savage Arena in Toledo, Ohio.
Southern Miss looks to finish off its nonconference in strong fashion in its first meeting against the Rockets. The Lady Eagles fell 83-72 to James Madison in their last game after climbing out of a 17-point first half hole and tying the game midway through he third quarter. Jakayla Johnson (Clinton, Miss.) led Southern Miss with 22 points on the night, but the Lady Eagles true breakout performance was a 17-point, 10-rebound game by Whitney Hart (Baton Rouge, La.).
Hart turned in her second career double-double and formed a true tandem attack in the Lady Eagles' comeback efforts. However, James Madison got 20-point games from two starts, including a game-leading 24-point night by Preseason Player of the Year Peyton McDaniel. The Dukes were able to hold off Southern Miss' second half surge and escape Reed Green Coliseum with its fifth overall win over the Lady Eagles.
Toledo enters the weekend with an 11-9 overall record and 6-4 ledger in MAC play. The Rockets are led by second-year head coach Ginny Boggess, who posted a 24-9 record in her debut season in the Glass City. Boggess' second season with UT has suffered some setbacks, but the Rockets are still in the hunt for the MAC crown.
Kendall Carruthers leads the Rocketts with 12.4 points per game as one of three with double-figure scoring averages. Faith Fedd-Robinson and Patricia Anumgba post 11.8 and 10.3 points per game, respectively, to lead the charge for the Rockets. Three other players all contribute at least seven points each contest as well.
Fedd-Robinson leads UT with 6.2 rebounds per game while Carruthers paces the group with 49 assists. Toledo fell to Troy earlier this season in the first round of the MAC-SBC Challenge by a final score of 88-51 in Troy. In addition to Troy, both Southern Miss and Toledo have also played Northern Illinois with Toledo defeating NIU 70-49 and Southern Miss defeating NIU 77-56.
