2/24/2026 2:58:00 PM | Women's Basketball
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss women's basketball heads to Mobile, Ala., to take on South Alabama (10-17, 3-13 Sun Belt) in the penultimate game of the 2025-26 regular season. The Lady Eagles (14-14, 7-9 Sun Belt) need a strong finish to lock in a favorable seed in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament next week in Pensacola, Fla. Tipoff between Southern Miss and the Jaguars of South Alabama is set for 5 p.m. on Wednesday with broadcasts on ESPN+ and the Southern Miss Sports Network.
Jason Baker, the Voice of the Lady Eagles, opens the Lady Eagle Courtside Show at 4:30 p.m. on 92.7 FM (Hattiesburg) and the Southern Miss Game Day App. Pat Greenwood anchors the ESPN+ broadcast airing at 5 p.m. and produced by South Alabama.
Southern Miss did not extend its win streak to three in a Feb. 21 trip to Troy, Ala., where the Lady Eagles fell 97-80 to the Trojans on senior day at Trojan Arena. Meloney Thames (Philadelphia, Miss.) led all scorers with 24 points as one of four Lady Eagles in double-figures. However, the Trojans out-rebounded Southern Miss 62-40 on the day with three Trojans posting double-doubles and led by Zay Dyer's 21-point, 20-rebound outing.
Jakayla Johnson (Clinton, Miss.) leads Southern Miss on the year with 14.9 points per game as one of four active Lady Eagles in double-figures, joined by Thames, Hayleigh Breland (Wiggins, Miss.) and Carly Keats (Philadelphia, Miss.). Redshirt freshman Whitney Hart (Baton Rouge, La.) has started the last 12 games for Southern Miss and owns a season-average of 6.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per game but is averaging 9.1 points and 8.4 rebounds since her first start.
Southern Miss meets South Alabama for the 42nd time in the series' history. The two teams first met in the first season the Lady Eagles fielded a team with a Jan. 15, 1976, meeting. Southern Miss leads the all-time series 27-14 and 6-1 in Sun Belt Conference play since joining the Jaguars – the Sun Belt's longest-tenured member – in 2022-23.
The Lady Eagles won this season's previous meeting 84-65 in Hattiesburg thanks to a 20-point outing off the bench from Johnson. She was one of four Lady Eagles in double-figures to help out-score South Alabama 48-33 in the second half en route to the 19-point victory. Southern Miss is 10-10 all-time in Mobile with a 5-3 record in the Jaguars former home, Jaguar Gym, and a 5-7 record in the Mitchell Center, which has hosted every meeting in the Port City since its opening in 1999. Southern Miss last won in Mobile on Jan. 27, 2024, in a 77-43 romp.
South Alabama enters the final week of the season 10-17 overall and 3-13 in Sun Belt Conference play. The Jaguars are led by third-year head coach and former long-time South Alabama assistant Yolisha Jackson, who sports a 25-64 ledger leading the Jaguars. Her rebuilding efforts are showing progress with this season's squad improving in the majority of statistical categories and reaching 10 wins for the first time since 2020-21.
Three members of the Jaguars squad average double-figures, led by Amyah Sutton's 11.7 points per game and followed by Cordasia Harris' 10.9 and Daniela Gonzalez's 10.0. Gonzalez and Sutton are the only Jaguars to start in every game while Harris leads the team with 8.4 rebounds per game.
Missy Bilderback is 4-1 all-time against South Alabama with all five prior meetings also coming against Jackson. She is 1-0 at Southern Miss against Jackson and South Alabama after finishing 3-1 against the combo in her two seasons at ULM.
