How it Happened
It was a slow start in the Cajundome as both teams went scoreless over the first two minutes before Louisiana hit a corner three in front of the Southern Miss bench. Djahi Binet gave the Golden Eagles their first points with his fifth dunk of the season on the next possession.
The Ragin' Cajuns went on to make three straight shots as they took a 12-6 lead into the second media timeout of the half. Meanwhile, Tylik Weeks had four points and four rebounds through the first eight minutes of action.
Southern Miss' offense woke up after the Cajuns took a six-point lead as it went on a 14-5 run to take a four-point lead. The Golden Eagles went 8-for-9 from the floor during that stretch. Southern Miss then went on an 8-1 run later in the half to pull ahead by nine, which included Binet's second dunk of the half.
Binet scored 11 points in the first half, which led all scorers. That put him in double figures for the second straight game after scoring 14 in the win over ULM. After its slow start, Southern Miss ended the half shooting 54.2 percent on 13 made field goals. Seven different scorers filled up the points column as Israel Hart added five.
Southern Miss went without a field goal over the first five minutes of the half but took advantage of its six trips to the charity stripe. The two teams traded points over that stretch before Jaxon Olvera drilled a three-pointer to cut it to a two-point game. Louisiana broke its three-minute scoring stretch with a pair of free throws at the 11:25 mark, which put the Golden Eagles in front by one.
Over the next three minutes, Louisiana had one field goal and went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Each time the second free throw went in, the Cajuns took a one-point lead, and each time the Golden Eagles answered by going down the floor for a score.
Dylan Brumfield broke the stretch with a steal and score with 6:03 left to give the Golden Eagles a 54-41 lead. Israel Hart followed with a three-point basket that forced a Louisiana timeout after the Golden Eagle fans in attendance made their presence known. Southern Miss then went on a 20-4 run that gave the Golden Eagles a 10-point lead in a hurry.
Louisiana answered with a 7-2 run and grabbed a couple of Golden Eagle turnovers to cut it five with 13 seconds to play. Hart, though, hit a pair of clutch free throws to seal the win. The game was effectively put on ice when Binet took an outlet pass and threw down his second dunk of the game with 35 seconds left.
