How it Happened
Curt Lewis and Djahi Binet scored on back-to-back looks to counter Troy's first basket of the ballgame, but despite those baskets, the Golden Eagles started the game 3-for-10 from the floor. Binet took Southern Miss into the under-eight media timeout with an 8-7 lead after a quick layup.
Binet continued to fly around as he had accumulated six rebounds in the first nine minutes of the game. The game was tied at 10-10 at the next media timeout after both teams had gone on a scoring drought of four-plus minutes each. Izzy Hart broke the Golden Eagle drought with a baseline jumper that gave Southern Miss a 15-14 lead.
Troy got an open three at the top of the key from Austin Cross, which was part of a 16-4 run that put the Trojans ahead by 10 with 3:52 left in the half. Troy extended the lead to 19 points after Cobi Campbell hit three consecutive three-pointers, with the last coming with 1:01 to play in the opening half.
Southern Miss held Troy scoreless over the final 60 seconds, while Tylik Weeks and Curt Lewis managed to score to make it 42-26 at the break. Troy benefited from 10 points off turnovers in the half as the Golden Eagles turned over the ball six times. Southern Miss managed to shoot the ball at a 40 percent clip over the first 20 minutes after starting the game shooting 30 percent.
The Golden Eagles started the second half on a 7-3 run to cut the Troy advantage to 12. Southern Miss upped its defense as well, forcing two quick turnovers. Binet gave the Golden Eagles a quick boost on a put-back dunk to make it 47-35 in favor of Troy. The Trojans, though, got a questionable foul call on a three-point attempt that led to three-made free throws. That play and a layup 12 seconds later quickly pushed the Troy lead back to 17.
Troy then took a 25-point lead with 12:22 to play in the game before Fallou Diagne hit a three-pointer to end a five-minute drought of no field goals for Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles used a 10-2 run after Diagne's basket to make it 64-47, Troy, but that's the last true run Southern Miss managed to make.
Troy outscored Southern Miss 25-18 over the final eight minutes as Troy took over first place in the Sun Belt with a 28-point victory. The Trojans went 11-for-25 from deep and shot 52.3 percent from the floor for the game. Southern Miss shot 43.9 percent from the floor and made three three-pointers on 20 attempts.
