
Southern Miss Sweeps ULM in Sun Belt Opener

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss volleyball opened Sun Belt Conference play with a 3-0 sweep of ULM on Friday night inside the Wellness Center, taking set scores of 25-22, 25-16, 25-18.
The Golden Eagles hit .252 as a team with 39 kills and seven service aces, while holding the Warhawks to a .098 hitting percentage.
The first set was a back-and-forth battle, featuring 13 ties and four lead changes. Brynn Botkin and Sadie McAda combined for seven kills in the frame, helping Southern Miss close on an 8-3 run to secure the 25-22 win.
In the second set, the Golden Eagles surged ahead early behind two aces from Lillie Johnson and kills from Botkin and Aubrey Judd to build a 10-5 lead. Southern Miss never trailed again, stretching the margin to 20-13 before closing with a Botkin kill for the 25-16 victory.
Set three saw the Golden Eagles capitalize on ULM errors while maintaining steady production at the net. Judd and McAda added three kills apiece in the frame, while Sunni Sheppard anchored the defense with five digs. A 6-1 run late pushed the lead to 22-15, and Botkin sealed the sweep with her match-high 13th kill for a 25-18 win.
Botkin led all players with 13 kills and four aces, while Judd added eight kills and McAda contributed seven kills and a team-high 13 digs. Johnson posted seven digs and two aces, and Elly Stewart chipped in three blocks. Setter Gaby Zovko paced the offense with 33 assists.
The Golden Eagles improved to 9-3 (1-0 SBC) and will close the weekend series with ULM at 6 p.m. Friday in the Wellness Center.
