HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss has enjoyed its share of great quarterbacks.
Some of those signal callers include Reggie Collier, Brett Favre, Austin Davis, Vic Purvis, and Nick Mullens, all of whom went on to play at the next level.
Golden Eagle fans may be watching their next great National Football League quarterback, Braylon Braxton, who transferred to the program for his final collegiate season for the 2025 campaign after playing for both Tulsa and Marshall.
The accolades were high coming in for the senior from Frisco, Texas, who led the Thundering Herd to a Sun Belt Conference championship last season. Voted as the SBC Newcomer of the Year a season ago, he was also named the championship game MVP. That outstanding season in 2024 propelled him to being named the league's preseason offensive Player of the Year and he has not disappointed thus far.
Through four games, Braxton has already thrown for 1,484 yards on 96-of-146 throws for a 65.8 completion percentage. He has thrown at least two touchdown passes in all four games and now has nine on the year compared to just three interceptions. He is the fastest Southern Miss quarterback to go over 1,000 yards since the 2020 season.
While the Golden Eagles have enjoyed 100-yard receivers in each of the last two games with Tychaun Chapman collecting 112 yards against App State and Carl Chester with 118 at Louisiana Tech, Braxton has been able to spread the offense around to different offensive players.
In fact, sixteen Golden Eagles have already caught at least one pass with five recording at least 10 receptions, including a team-best 13 by Chester, followed by 12 from Elijah Metcalf, 11 by Micah Davis – who also a team-best three touchdown receptions – along with 10 each from Bralon Brown and Jeffery Pittman.
In addition, Braxton has rushed for a team-best 128 yards on 39 carries.
Braxton ranks in the Top 20 in the country in three different statistical categories. Those include being No. 10 in completions per game (24.0), No. 14 in passing yards and No. 15 in passing touchdowns. Those totals also rank first in the SBC.
The next chance to see Braxton in action is this Saturday at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium against Jax State. Game time is set for 6 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at SouthernMiss.com/Tickets.
