HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss men's tennis is turning heads early this season, led by standout Kale Mize (Redshirt-Sophomore, Tulsa). After a dominant junior career, where he ranked Top 10 nationally in USA junior tennis, earned a five-star recruit status, won multiple Level 2 national championships, and represented high-profile brands like Wilson and Adidas, Mize has wasted no time showing what he's capable of in the Black & Gold.
With 19 offers on the table, and after decommitting from Utah, Mize chose Southern Miss because he believes in the team's potential to win conference titles and rise into the top 75 nationally. Despite arriving with an injury that sidelined him from hitting for over two weeks, the training staff worked with him intensively, getting him back into form. His resilience paid off in a recent match where he defeated a top-ranked opponent (UTR 12.88), an FSU transfer and former junior world-top-100 player from Italy, all while facing a rowdy crowd on his opponent's home court. Mize credited not just physical preparation, but the mental coaching from Head Coach Zubin Engineer, for the victory.
Looking ahead, Mize's next big chance to shine is at the UTR Pro Tennis event on September 29, a tournament that holds special meaning as he gets to compete in his home region.
The Golden Eagles are off to a promising start thanks in large part to Mize's mix of talent, mental grit, and heart. With players like him leading the way, Southern Miss Men's tennis looks ready to make waves this season.
