HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Saturday afternoon's Southern Miss football scrimmage on a steamy hot game field provided a chance for some Golden Eagle players to move up the depth charts.
Just two weeks before opening the season with in-state foe Mississippi State – a game that is set for Aug. 30 at 11 a.m. – Huff gave the players on the second and third teams most of the snaps during the hour and a half scrimmage.
"We have been able to get through a very physical, taxing camp and to be as healthy as we are is a good thing," said Huff following the practice. "Today, our twos and threes, who we scrimmaged today, some guys did some really good things. I was really impressed with the flow and the organization of it. Sometimes you get the younger guys in there and you have a lot of penalties and formation issues, and we didn't have that. So that is a credit to the coaches for getting the guys prepared for today's scrimmage so that could show what they could do."
Most of the players on the first team did not see action including quarterback Braylon Braxton, but Huff was still pleased with the quarterback play of Landry Lyddy, Jacobe Robinson and John White.
Lyddy to most of the snaps and threw for 210 yards while Robinson added 36 passing yards and White 64 yards, including a 44-yard strike to Jermane Hayes.
Lyddy tossed a 15-yard scoring pass to TJ Johnson in the front corner of the end zone, while Robinson added a five-yard scoring run on a keeper and Jaylin Carter posted an eight-yard touchdown carry.
Huff also said he saw an improvement in the kicking game that saw Reed Harradine hit field goals of 43, 43, and 35 yards in the scrimmage. Australian punter Jack Murley also saw more work this week, after arriving from Down Under right at the start of camp.
The Golden Eagles are off from practice tomorrow and start classes on Monday.
Tickets are still available for the seven-game Golden Eagle home schedule. Fans can purchase tickets by going online at SouthernMiss.com/Tickets.
