HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- After guiding Southern Miss women's golf to a Sun Belt Tournament title and NCAA Regional appearance, head coach Colton Cowan has agreed to a new multi-year contract that will keep him in Hattiesburg for the foreseeable future.Â
"I've enjoyed my first year here in Hattiesburg -- the University is great, the people are great, and the food is good," Cowan said. "I couldn't ask for anything more, so when this opportunity was provided to continue with the women's golf program here at Southern Miss, it was a no brainer. Having an administration that has the same mission and vision as I do for my golf program is a key component for us to continue to be successful. Jeremy McClain and Shawn Jones continuously show support and provide resources that allow us to continue to move in the right direction.
"Another great resource that we have here is the men's golf head coach Eddie Brescher. We are constantly bouncing ideas off of each other and using each other as sounding boards to continue to shape Southern Miss golf to the caliber of a program we both believe it can become. I'm honored and excited to continue the work that we've started, and I have the belief of our administration to keep it going."
In Cowan's first season with the Golden Eagles, he helped guide Southern Miss to arguably its best season in program history. The team notched a third-place finish in the second tournament of the season at the Hoover Invitational. The momentum reached its peak in the fall semester when Southern Miss won The Judson at Hattiesburg Country Club. Taylor Trible and Louise Cuyvers both grabbed top four finishes at The Judson as Southern Miss shot a semester-low 867 as a team.Â
"We are excited to have Colton Cowan leading our women's golf program into the future," said Director of Athletics Jeremy McClain. "He is a tremendous leader and has made a significant impact in a very short period of time, and we look forward to helping him continue to move our program forward."
The success kept rolling following winter break as Southern Miss returned to action at the Puerto Rico Shootout where it finishes third. A fourth-place finish followed at the Bama Beach Bash where it shaved off 14 strokes between the second and third rounds. The Golden Eagles then claimed another title when it cruised through the ULM Invitational. They also shot a season-low 859 54-hole total.Â
Matched up with No. 2 Coastal Carolina, the Golden Eagles won 3-2 to advance to the title bout against top-seeded Georgia Southern. Southern Miss beat the Eagles, 3.5-1.5, and were crowned Sun Belt champions. The win automatically qualified the Golden Eagles for the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. Southern Miss was sent to the NCAA Norman Regional and placed 12th.Â
Cowan and the Golden Eagles will start their quest for another title on Sept. 8 at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.
