
Men’s Golf Ranks 10th after Second Day of Sun Belt Conference Championship

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Sophomore Benjamin Fernandez (Asuncion, Paraguay) and freshman Matthew Javier (Toronto, Ontario) each shot a second-round 73, Tuesday, to lead Southern Miss in the Sun Belt Conference Championship being held at the Annandale Golf Club in Madison, Miss.
The par 72, 7,157-yard course saw the Golden Eagles collect a nine-over 287 team score, which led to them falling three places in the team standings to 10th in the 14-team field.
Junior Will Burnham (Jackson, Miss.) leads the way for the Golden Eagles and sits in a 22nd-place tie after firing a second-round 75 for a 145-stroke total.
Fernandez ranks next with a 146-stroke total, which is good for a 30th-place tied, while Javier finds himself one stroke back of Fernandez at 147, which puts him in a 32nd-place tie. Senior Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) added a 76 on Tuesday's circuit for a 149 total, which places him in a 43rd-place tie, while sophomore Supakorn Amornchaichan (Pattaya City, Thailand) added a 77, which gives him a 36-hole total of 151 and ties him for 56th.
The Golden Eagles possess a team score of 587, 21 strokes behind leader Arkansas State. Coastal Carolina ranks second in the event at 570, followed by Georgia Southern (572) and both Louisiana and Troy (577) to round out the top five. The top four finishers on Wednesday, advance to Thursday's match play to determine a team champion.
The individual medalist will be crowned Wednesday following the completion of the first 54 holes of the tournament. The final round starts at the No. 1 and No. 10 tees beginning at 8:30 a.m. Southern Miss starts teeing off at 9:15 a.m.
