HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The annual spring football game at Southern Miss ended in a tie on Saturday afternoon at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
In front of a sizable crowd, first-year head coach Charles Huff and the Golden Eagles took the field under sunny skies in Hattiesburg. The scrimmage featured four quarters that were five-minutes in length with a running clock.
The first offensive sparks of the day came in the second quarter as Landry Lyddy found Davis Dalton in the back of the end zone for a five-yard score. That gave the black squad a 7-0 lead heading into halftime.
Looking to answer in the second half, the white team got a sack from MaLik Caswell as he stormed into the backfield from his safety position. That loss of yardage resulted in the white team getting the ball back into their hands.
John White took advantage and made quick work to find Kyirin Heath down the middle of the field for a big gain. Though Heath made the play, Caswell forced a fumble for the black team, but Tychaun Chapman was able to recover on the 10-yard line. White then found Bralon Brown in the right side of the end zone for a 10-yard score that tied the game at 7-7.
The game ended in a 7-7 tie as both teams were unable to score late in the fourth quarter. The fans in attendance were rewarded with an autograph session in the south end zone to cap off the spring game festivities.
Today's scrimmage marked the end of the spring season for the Golden Eagles after going through 15 practices. Southern Miss opens the regular season at home against Mississippi State on Saturday, Aug. 30.
