The Golden Eagles' 28 runs set the highest mark in Division I softball this season, surpassing UCLA's 26-run effort against Weber State last week. The total was also just one run shy of the all-time program record of 29, set on Feb. 28, 2009, against North Carolina Central. The previous second-best mark was 24, achieved against Arkansas-Pine Bluff in 2015 and Louisiana Tech in 2007.
Southern Miss recorded a season-high 17 hits, tying for the sixth most in a single game in program history. The team's 21 RBI ranked second all-time in program history, while their 13 walks set a new facility record and tied for second-most in program history.
Twelve different Golden Eagles recorded a hit, with five turning in multi-hit performances: Natalie Taylor, Sam Bodell, Jana Lee, Mikaila Fox and Carlee Durham. Lee led the team with four RBI, including a three-run homer in the second inning, her second of the season, and her second consecutive game, with a home run following her grand slam against Southeastern on Wednesday.
Freshman infielder Abbi Troquille drew a career-high three walks and tied an individual facility record with four runs scored.
In the circle, Natalie Herrington earned her third win of the season with two innings of work, while sophomore BrookLynn White struck out a career-high tying five batters in relief.
Southern Miss wasted no time, loading the bases with no outs in the first inning thanks to two walks and a single from Maddie Weeks, who extended her hitting streak to eight games. Lee opened the scoring with an RBI single before a defensive error cleared the bases. Fox followed with an RBI single, bringing Lee home to make it 4-0.
UMES got on the board with an RBI double in the second, but Southern Miss responded by plating ten runs on six hits in the bottom half. Lee's three-run homer highlighted the explosion, while Carrie Green stole two bases and walked twice in the frame. Faith Kivett recorded her first career triple, driving in Claire Ginder. Two bases-loaded walks, a wild pitch that scored Hannah Christian and an RBI single from Bodell capped the scoring outbreak.
Taylor added a run in the third before Southern Miss erupted again in the fourth, scoring 13 runs on six hits. Madison Moak contributed a two-RBI double and an RBI walk, while Durham and Taylor each recorded multiple RBI in the inning.
The 26-run margin of victory ranks second in program history, trailing only the 29-2 win over North Carolina Central in 2009. The Golden Eagles have now won four straight games for the first time since 2023, outscoring opponents 42-9 during the streak.
