Softball Rallies in Seventh Inning for 5-4 Victory at South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. – Down by two runs heading into the seventh inning, Southern Miss Softball (17-17, 4-3 Sun Belt) strung together five hits to score three runs, securing a dramatic 5-4 comeback win over South Alabama (15-19, 4-3 Sun Belt) on Friday night.
With two outs in the final inning, Kayce Bennett delivered an RBI single to cut the deficit to one. Moments later, Jana Lee tied the game with an RBI double. Claire Ginder then put the Golden Eagles ahead with a single, and pinch runner Carlee Durham crossed home plate on a South Alabama error.
Southern Miss battled against Jaguars' starter Ryley Harrison, who threw 132 pitches over 6.2 innings. Meanwhile, Lee led the Golden Eagles to victory in her seventh complete game of the season, allowing five hits and two earned runs while striking out seven on just 84 pitches.
Offensively, Southern Miss outhit South Alabama 11-5, with Lee, Ginder, and Natalie Weeks accounting for seven of the team's hits. Weeks recorded a career-high three hits, including a leadoff double in the seventh inning.
After two scoreless frames, South Alabama struck first in the third on a wild pitch and added another run in the fourth with a solo home run by Gabby Stagner.
Southern Miss responded in the fifth when Faith Kivett reached on an error and advanced into scoring position. Weeks followed with a single, setting up Ryanna Valdivia for an RBI single that put the Golden Eagles on the board. With the bases loaded and two outs, Bennett drew a walk to force home the tying run.
The Jaguars reclaimed the lead in the sixth, capitalizing on two singles to set up a sacrifice fly from Stagner. South Alabama added another run on a Southern Miss error.
Trailing 4-2 in the seventh, Southern Miss mounted its third comeback win of the season after trailing through six innings. South Alabama put a runner on first after a fielding error in the bottom of the seventh, but the Golden Eagles quickly recorded three outs to secure the victory.

- Freshman Hannah Christian extended her hitting streak to seven games, the longest of her career and the longest active streak on the team.
- Weeks recorded her ninth multi-hit game of the season, the most on the team.
- Lee has tallied 63 strikeouts this season, just two shy of her career-high set in 2022 as a freshman.
