HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss Softball (16-16, 3-3 Sun Belt) dropped its series finale against Troy (21-12, 3-3 Sun Belt), 6-2, on Sunday at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
Despite the loss, the Golden Eagles secured their first conference series win of the season after taking the first two games against the Trojans. Southern Miss finished the week 3-1, including a 10-4 midweek victory over Nicholls.
Troy responded to its early series losses by capitalizing on two Southern Miss errors while starter Alyssa Faircloth limited the Golden Eagles to just four hits. Faircloth earned her tenth win of the season, allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out four and walking four.
Southern Miss starter Jana Lee took the loss, tossing four innings with three strikeouts while allowing four runs, all of which were unearned, on four hits and a walk.
Both teams went down in order until the bottom half of the third, when Claire Ginder and Carrie Green created a scoring opportunity for Southern Miss with back-to-back singles. However, Faircloth escaped the inning with a strikeout.
Troy then broke through in the fourth as Makaley Boswell singled and Taylor McKinney came around to score on a Southern Miss error, giving the Trojans a 1-0 lead. The Trojans extended their advantage in the fifth, adding another run on an error before Sarah Beth Brake's sacrifice fly and McKinney's RBI single made the game 4-0.
Freshman Kayla Giardina entered in relief for Lee, escaping further damage in the fifth and then retiring Troy in order in the sixth.
The Trojans added two insurance runs in the seventh, as Kayden Dunn launched a solo home run and Mia Tidmore followed with an RBI triple. Sophomore BrookLynn White finished the frame in the circle for Southern Miss.
The Golden Eagles threatened in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases after walks from Carlee Durham, Shelby Allen and Carrie Green. Freshman Hannah Christian delivered a two-RBI single up the middle on a full count to trim the team's deficit, but Troy sealed the win with a flyout to right field.
