Track and Field Prepares for Sun Belt Conference Championships
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southern Miss track and field team heads to Birmingham to compete in the Sun Belt Indoor Track and Field Championships on Monday and Tuesday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Last time out, the Golden Eagles' men's and women's indoor teams combined for six top-three finishes at the UAB Invitational in Birmingham. Gracious Ushie led the Sun Belt with a time of 6.66 seconds in the men's 60-meter dash.
The Golden Eagle women secured three podium finishes. Alana Simon tied for third in the high jump with a clearance of 1.73 meters, while Jaellene Burgess finished third in the unseeded 800-meter race. Burgess also helped the distance medley relay team—consisting of Emme Bates, Olivia Smith and Sarah Parnell—claim third place with a time of 11:58.45.
The men's team also recorded three top-three finishes, led by Zayne Palomino's victory in the high jump with a mark of 2.11 meters. Tyler Hughes tied for third in the event at 2.01 meters, while Tyler Nichols secured another third-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 7.53 meters.
Monday's events begin at 10 a.m. with the heptathlon and conclude with the men's distance medley relay at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday starts with the heptathlon final and women's high jump, wrapping up with the men's 4x400-meter relay, followed by the awards presentation.
The meet will be streamed on ESPN+.
