PENSACOLA, Fla. – Saturday night belonged to Tylik Weeks as the junior scored 37 points in a 92-83 win for Southern Miss (3-3, 0-0 Sun Belt) over North Florida (1-4, 0-0 ASUN) at the Pensacola Bay Center. His monster night helped the Golden Eagles erase a 13-point deficit and advance to the Pensacola Invitational title bout tomorrow afternoon against UT Martin.
Weeks' 37 points are the most by a Southern Miss player since Kourtlin Jackson dropped 40 against Marshall on March 5, 2016. It's tied for the 11th-most by a player in program history and the seventh-most in Division I this season.
The two teams traded baskets for much of the first half until North Florida drained three-straight from deep to jump to an 11-point lead with eight minutes left in the first half. Steady point guard play from Dylan Brumfield helped the Golden Eagles weather the storm, but back-to-back scores from Kent Jackson made it a 13-point game late in the first half.
Isaac Taveras cut it to single digits before Jackson threw up a fade away at the buzzer to make it 46-35 at the half. While the Golden Eagles didn't shoot the ball bad at a 44 percent clip, North Florida capitalized on a 56.3 percent shooting percentage from deep.
After the quick break, Southern Miss came out with some fire. Weeks opened the scoring in the half and set the Golden Eagles on a 24-6 run over the first seven minutes. Taveras gave Southern Miss a 51-50 lead with an and-one in the run and then Weeks pushed the lead to four on the next made basket.
Brumfield and Binet finished in double figures for the first time this season as they finished with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Taveras came off the bench to score 14 points, while Southern Miss finished with 72 bench points as a team.
Brewer Carruth added five points, including a clutch corner three during Southern Miss' big run in the second half. Brumfield also added seven assists to go along with five from Israel Hart.
Weeks' night put him atop the list for points scored and field goals made by a player under Jay Ladner. As a team, Southern Miss' 57 points in the second half are tied for the most in a half under Ladner.
Southern Miss will now play UT Martin in the championship game at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Bay Center. The game will stream on YouTube. The Golden Eagles last won a MTE championship at the 2022 Cancun Challenge.

Despite the record night from Weeks, Southern Miss found itself in a hole in the first half after the Ospreys hit nine of their first 15 three-point attempts. Five different North Florida players connected from deep while the Golden Eagles struggled from three-point land.Bully 👑
