HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss football team looks to register its sixth victory in a row – which would tie the longest winning streak in 10 years – when they play host to Texas State Saturday afternoon at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
The game takes place at 2:30 p.m. and can be seen via ESPN+ as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network. Tickets are also still available for the contest by going to SouthernMiss.com/Tickets.
Southern Miss enters the weekend with a 7-2 overall record and 5-0 in league play, holding a game and a half lead in the Sun Belt Conference West Division race after Troy lost 32-0 at Old Dominion Thursday night.
Texas State (3-6, 0-5) has dropped its last five contests, four of which have been decided by seven points or less, including a 42-39 setback at Louisiana last Saturday. The Bobcats offense ranks either first or second in the four major offensive categories in the league, holding No. 1 in total offense (477.2 yards per game), along with No. 2 in scoring offense (34.7), rushing offense (211.7) and passing offense (265.6).
As for the Golden Eagles, they continue to play well behind strong quarterback play from redshirt senior Braylon Braxton and a defense that ranks No. 1 in the country in both turnover margin and interceptions.
Braxton, who has thrown a touchdown pass in each of his nine games this season, has thrown for 2,187 yards on 179-of-266 throws with 19 touchdowns and only five interceptions. Four of Braxton's top targets have at least 20 catches this season, including Elijah Metcalf, who is tops with 30 catches for 425 yards. Micah Davis ranks second with 24 receptions and 330 yards to go along with a team-best four touchdown catches. Both Bralon Brown and Carl Chester have 20 catches apiece.
On the ground, Jeffery Pittman continues to pace the Golden Eagle rushing attack with 494 yards and a team-best six rushing scores, while Matt Jones enjoys the second-most with 273 yards on the ground.
Defensively, the Golden Eagles registered a season-high six turnovers at Arkansas State and now have 25 total for the season, including 20 interceptions. With his three interceptions last weekend, Josh Moten now ranks tied for first in the country with five interceptions as the Golden Eagles turnover margin is plus-1.78 a game this fall.
Linebacker Chris Jones continues to lead the Sun Belt in tackles at 10.2 per contest, while position mate Michael Montgomery ranks second in the league and No.12 nationally at 97 stops per game.
This will be the sixth meeting between the two schools with the Bobcats holding a 3-2 advantage, including two-straight victories over the Golden Eagles. That includes a 58-3 loss to TXST last season at San Marcos.
Following the Texas State contest, the Golden Eagles take to the road next weekend at South Alabama for their final road tilt of the regular season. Game time in Mobile is 2:30 p.m. and can be seen via ESPN+.
