After enjoying its first bye week of the season, the Southern Miss football team returns to action in a nationally televised contest Thursday at 7 p.m. CT at Sun Belt East Division foe Georgia Southern.
The Golden Eagles (3-2, 1-0 Sun Belt) find themselves on ESPN2 as one of just four college football contests that evening as they play at Allen E. Paulson Stadium for the first time. The tilt can also be heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
Southern Miss plays an Eagles squad that holds a 2-3 mark, which includes a 35-10 road loss to James Madison in their first Sun Belt game.
This will be just the second road outing for Charles Huff's program as the Golden Eagles look for their first victory away from Hattiesburg since defeating Louisiana, 34-31, in overtime on a Thursday night, Nov. 9, 2023.
Quarterback Braylon Braxton continues to pace the Golden Eagles offensively as he has thrown for 1,236 yards on 109-of-168 attempts with 11 touchdowns and only three interceptions. Braxton ranks first in the Sun Belt Conference in passing yards per game (247.2) and second in total offense (281.0), while also holding the No. 4 spot in passing efficiency (144.72).
Braxton has thrown multiple touchdown passes in all five games this season, as the Golden Eagles are averaging 31.0 points per contest.
Six different Golden Eagle receivers have at least 10 catches this season, including a team-best 14 from both Carl Chester and Elijah Metcalf. Chester leads the team with 224 reception yards, while Micah Davis, who has 13 catches, holds the most touchdown grabs for the squad with three. Sixteen different Golden Eagles have caught a pass this season of which eight have tallied at least one touchdown.
On the ground, Jeffery Pittman leads the team in rushing with 206 yards as he also has a team-best four touchdowns, all coming on the ground. Braxton is next at 169 yards, followed by Matt Jones with 121.
On defense, Chris Jones continues to lead the SBC in total tackles with 54, which also ranks No. 7 nationally, while Michael Montgomery holds the No. 3 spot with 48 and a No. 13 ranking in the NCAA.
The Golden Eagles have forced 10 turnovers this fall, including eight interceptions, ranking No. 8 in the nation in turnover margin per game. Ian Foster has two picks this fall, which leads the team with both returned for touchdowns, ranking No. 17 in the NCAA statistics.
This will be the second game of this series with the Golden Eagles winning the only other matchup 70-0 in Hattiesburg during the 1941 campaign.
After Georgia Southern, Southern Miss stays on the road for a Oct. 18 affair at Louisiana. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
