Southern Miss Volleyball Drops Final Match at Old Dominion to Conclude Road Swing

NORFOLK, Va. – Southern Miss (14-7, 6-4 Sun Belt) fell 3-0 (25-16, 28-26, 25-23) to Old Dominion (5-16, 2-8 Sun Belt) Friday night at the ODU Volleyball Center in Sun Belt Conference volleyball action.
The Monarchs took set one 25-16, never trailing early on. A Kaylee Lowther (Madison, Miss.) ace pulled Southern Miss within one but Old Dominion took four of the next five points and never looked back. Old Dominion out-hit Southern Miss .393 to .100 with the Golden Eagles tallying nine kills in the opening stanza.
Brynn Botkin (Magnolia, Texas) took the first points of set two and was a key contributor for the Golden Eagles throughout the set. After the Monarchs took a brief 3-2 lead, Southern Miss held serve and took a 15-14 led into the set break. Botkin swung 11 times in the frame, connecting for five kills to go along with a service ace.
The Golden Eagles reached set point thanks to a Monarch service error, but Old Dominion rattled off four consecutive points to stave off the Golden Eagles and reach set point themselves. Elly Stewart (Three Rivers, Texas) and Gaby Zovko (Beford, Mass.) teamed up for the block to level things at 25 apiece.
The two squads traded points to reach 26-26 before Old Dominion took the final two points of the set to take the 2-0 lead in the match. Zovko dished out 14 of her 17 assists on the night in the second set.
The third set opened with the Monarchs holding on to a slim margin through the media break. Southern Miss charged back from down 17-14 to bring things within one at 21-20. Botkin got her eighth kill of the match to pull Southern Miss to a 23-22 deficit, leading Old Dominion to call a timeout. The Monarchs took two of the set's next three point to escape with a 25-23 set victory and seal the match for the home team.
Sadie McAda (Pleasanton, Texas) led the Golden Eagles with 10 kills on 28 attempts while Botkin and Emily Davis (Brandon, Miss.) each tallied nine of their own. Zovko's 17 assists led the Golden Eagles while Morgen Durgens (League City, Texas) also notched 12.
Southern Miss returns home to take on Texas State next week at the Southern Miss Wellness Center. The Golden Eagles open play against the Bobcats on Friday, Oct. 31, at 6 p.m. with the final match slated for Noon on Saturday, Nov. 1.
