HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Several things are at stake when Southern Miss meets ULM for homecoming Saturday afternoon at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
The contest, which starts at 2:30 p.m., can be seen via ESPN+ or heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network. Tickets also remain for the homecoming affair and can be purchased by going to SouthernMiss.com/Tickets.
The Golden Eagles (5-2 overall, 3-0 Sun Belt) look to snap a two-game homecoming losing streak, while also looking to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2022 and for the 18th time overall since 2000.
Southern Miss eyes a fourth consecutive victory as well, which would be the longest winning streak since capturing six-straight in 2015. A win against the Warhawks (3-4, 1-2 SBC) also continues to keep the Golden Eagles atop the Sun Belt Conference West Division standings, giving them their first 4-0 start in league play since they defeated Tulane, USF, Houston and East Carolina to open the 2004 Conference USA season.
The formula used for this strong start includes a high-octane offense that averages 30.7 points and 390.7 yards total offensive yards per game, while also posting a turnover margin on defense that ranks No. 3 in the country at plus 1.29 takeaways a contest.
Quarterback Braylon Braxton leads the Golden Eagles offensively, throwing for 1,710 yards on 141-of-214 with 14 touchdown passes and only four interceptions. He has thrown at touchdown pass in all seven games, while also adding 195 yards on the ground.
Jeffery Pittman paces the ground game for Southern Miss with 419 yards and six touchdowns, while Matt Jones ranks third with 187 yards and Robert Briggs, Jr., fourth at 133.
Four different receivers tie for the team lead in catches with18 catches, including Micah Davis, who ranks first in both receiving yards (285) and touchdown catches (four). Joining Davis with 18 receptions is Elijah Metcalf, Bralon Brown and Carl Chester.
On the defensive side, the Golden Eagles rank No. 2 nationally in pass interceptions (13) and No. 12 in team sacks at 3.00 per game. That group has been led by sophomore Chris Jones, who holds a No. 7 national ranking in tackles with 73, followed by Michael Montgomery who has posted 64 which is good for No.16 in the country.
Montgomery, along with Ian Foster, Josh Moten and Ahmere Foster, each have two interceptions apiece this fall. Both of Moten's picks have been returned for touchdowns. J'Mond Tapp is tops among the squad's defensive lineman tackles with 39, while being the team leading in both tackles for loss with 6.5 and sacks with 4.0.
Following the ULM contest, the Golden Eagles will enjoy their second bye week, before traveling to face SBC West Division opponent Arkansas State, Nov. 8.
