HATTIESBURG, Miss. – With fall camp already almost at the halfway mark, the Southern Miss football team saw continued improvement on Wednesday morning with a two-hour practice in shells on the game field at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
The day proved to be one with the team's younger players taking steps during the workout to help with the team's depth and the team's head coach praising the offensive side of the ball following the seventh workout of camp.
"We had some more inexperienced guys get most of the reps as we continue to develop depth," said fourth-year Southern Miss coach Will Hall. "Going back to the live reps from yesterday, the offense had a dominant day. They came out early with one of the more explosive days we've had here. They came out early and had three consecutive plays over 12-13 yards.
"The defense, though, answered the bell in the third-down period later, but then the offense was really good in the low red as well - great situational work for us and our skill kids offensively."
Hall went on to praise running back Dreke Clark (Starkville, Miss. / Memphis) who has really stepped his game up this fall. Wide receiver Ti Mims (Bay Minette, Ala. / Baldwin County HS) also was acknowledged for his solid play with a position group that continues to improve. Hall also said the quarterback play was sharp and that each one only had one negative inaccurate throw. The offensive line also showed some fortitude, especially in our screen game and run game.
Some of the defense players highlighted by Hall, especially during the third-down period, included transfer Desmyn Baker (Clinton, Miss. / WKU), who was flying all around the field. The defense also punched the ball out twice as Braxton Myers (Coppell, Texas / Purdue) got his hand on a ball and another time Demeco Roland (Broken Arrow, Okla. / Hutchinson CC) did a solid job of getting the ball out.
Hall went on to stress the need to see continued improvement for his team on both sides of the ball as they continue to get ready for the season opener, Saturday, Aug. 31., at Kentucky. The game is slated for 6:45 p.m. CT and can be seen on the SEC Network, as well as heard on the Southern Miss Sports Network.
"We're in the dog days of camp now," said Hall. "And we just had to continue to get a little bit better every day."
The Golden Eagles will be off the practice fields tomorrow, before returning to work Friday morning.
