Volleyball Marks 2024 Season Opener with Southern Miss Invitational

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss Volleyball will open its 2024 season by hosting the Southern Miss Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 30-31, with the first match against Northwestern State at 1:30 p.m. in the Wellness Center.
Other matches for the Golden Eagles include matches against Jacksonville on Friday at 7 p.m. and against Southern on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
The Golden Eagles lead the all-time series against Northwestern State, their first opponent of the tournament, with a 15-5 record.
The last time they competed, the Golden Eagles won in three straight sets during the 2016 season.
Southern Miss leads overall in statistical comparisons from the 2023 season against the Lady Demons, including 1,140 assists.
744 of those assists from 2023 are from sophomores Francesca Panunzio and Hayden Riddle. Both players return for the 2024 season, offering high-impact opportunities to lead the team's offense.
Southern Miss will face Jacksonville on Friday evening. The only previous matchup between these teams was in 2009, resulting in a 3-1 win for Southern Miss.
Head Coach Alicia Roth joins Jacksonville for her first season as head coach, having previously served as an assistant at Northwestern State for two years.
On Saturday afternoon, Southern will compete against Southern Miss in the final invitational match. Southern Miss leads 4-0 in series matchups against the Jaguars, all wins in straight sets.
Southern Head Coach Dawn Barnes also begins her first season with the Jaguars, bringing experience from multiple coaching positions.
The Golden Eagles are eager to start the season, energized by their performance during the Black and Gold Scrimmage on Aug. 17.
