Catching Up with Chris Jones During Fall Camp

*This is the fourth installation of a five-part question and answer series with Southern Miss football players during fall camp.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – We caught up with Chris Jones after Southern Miss football went through its final scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday morning. The freshman from Hartfield Academy treated Golden Eagle fans in attendance to a big interception late in the Fanfest-themed practice. Jones and Southern Miss have two practices remaining before classes start for the University on Wednesday.

How long have you been playing football?
"I've been playing football since I was six or seven. I started playing with the Byram Bengals."

What is your favorite thing about football?
"I love the physicality for sure - I like to hit. It's just fun to be out there with the guys and it's like a family. Those two things are probably my favorite part."

Who's been the most influential person in your career?
"I've had a lot of influential coaches, but I would say my dad. He trained me growing up and was more like a coach to me during that time. He instilled hard work in me and taught me how to grind it out to be a man. He got me to the point I'm at today, so I'd say my pops."

What is your favorite football moment in your life?
"Playing in the State Championship my senior year [at Hartfield Academy]. We won the first State Championship in school history, so that's probably my favorite forever. Well, I won't say forever because I want a ring when I get to the Super Bowl and the NFL. The State Championship, though, has probably been the best moment so far."

Tell us something about yourself that most people don't know.
"A lot of people think I'm aggressive because I play linebacker. I am aggressive on the field, but I'm chill off the field. I'm cool off the field, like I am not that aggressive."

What's your favorite meal and who would you who would you eat it with?
"My favorite meal is hot wings. I like to go to Wingstop and get that 10-piece hot wing. You got to get that."

What's the main thing you're trying to get out fall camp?
"This is my first fall camp and the main thing I got out of it is the grind of it. Of course I have been grinding all my life, but this has been the hardest out of all it. They told me it was going to be hard, but when you actually get there you have to grind it out. It's been a long three weeks, so I'm just glad God got me through it."

Walk us through the interception you got today.
"Man, I think I just made a play on the ball. God wanted me to make a play, and I made a play. I was dropping back, and I saw Ethan [Crawford] rolling out, so when he threw that ball, it was like slow motion. I just caught it and it was a big play."
