Women’s Basketball Heads to Bowling Green for 2024-25 MAC-SBC Challenge

NEW ORLEANS – The Sun Belt Conference and Mid-American Conference announced today the initial matchups of the 2024-25 MAC-SBC Challenge. Southern Miss women's basketball will open its 2024-25 season at Bowling Green on Monday, Nov. 4, in Bowling Green's Stroh Center in Bowling Green, Ohio.
In its second year, the MAC-SBC Challenge is a scheduling alliance in the sports of men's and women's basketball between the Sun Belt and Mid-American Conferences. During the 2023-24 season, the two conferences played a total of 24 games in both men's and women's basketball. Matchups within the Challenge are chosen using relevant NET data, geography and frequency of past matchups, with scheduling assistance provided by Ordinal Sports Group.
Last season, the Lady Eagles split their pair of games against MAC opponents, racing to a 77-60 win over Akron in November before falling 62-46 at Buffalo in February. Overall, the Sun Belt women easily took the took the overall prize, finished 15-9 against MAC counterparts.
This is the first meeting between Southern Miss and Bowling Green. The Lady Eagles are 3-1 overall against current members of the Mid-American Conference.
The Falcons finished last season 16-15 overall and 10-8 in MAC play in head coach Fred Chmiel's first season at the helm. The Falcons earned a berth to the Postseason WNIT before falling to Butler in the first round. Starters Amy Velasco, Paige Kohler and Erika Porter all return with Velasco and Kohler starting in all 31 contests last season.
Although BGSU's top two scoring options graduated, The trio of returning starters all averaged double-figures in 2023-24. Five reserves return for the Falcons for a total of eight returners. The Falcons brought on seven signees with five coming straight from high school and two after junior college careers.
Tipoff in Bowling Green will be announced at a later date. The second round of 2024-25 games is set for Saturday, February 8, with the Sun Belt Conference women's teams hosting their MAC opponents. The full slate of initial matchups is below.
