While the Chanticleers threatened to take the lead, the Golden Eagles maintained an advantage throughout the latter half of the game after jumping ahead on an eight-run third inning, capitalized by seven hits in the frame.
Southern Miss' bats erupted for a season-high 15 hits, the most since April 23, 2022 against UTSA. The game also marked the tenth time this season that the Golden Eagles have recorded ten or more hits.
Designated player Jana Lee led the team with three hits and three RBI and junior Ryanna Valdivia recorded a career-high three hits. For the second consecutive game, Hannah Borden also registered two hits, bringing her season total to a career-high of 48 hits. Kinsley Gordon also recorded her third multi-hit of the season with two hits.
In the circle, Lee earned her sixth win of the season, throwing five innings with seven hits and six earned runs allowed with two strikeouts.
Coastal Carolina claimed the first runs of the day in the second inning on a sacrifice fly and then another run from a throwing error.
The Golden Eagles immediately responded, as Shelby Allen hit a leadoff single, and then found her way home on an RBI double from Natalie Taylor. Valdivia, Kinsley Gordon and Kayla Agner hit consecutive singles, driving in four more runs. After Gordon scored on a wild pitch, Lee hit a single to send Maddie Weeks and Borden home, who both reached base on walks.
Coastal Carolina started to fight back in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with two outs. The Chanticleers drew a walk, forcing a runner home and then Delaney Keith hit a three RBI double to narrow the Golden Eagles' lead. Coastal cut the deficit to one with an RBI double from Georgia Hood in the fifth inning.
Southern Miss added insurance back to its lead at the top of the seventh, as Weeks led the inning off with her second career double. The second baseman reached home on an error at third base. Lee and Valdivia added two final runs for Southern Miss with their third hits of the game on a pair of RBI singles.
While Georgia Hood hit a two-run home run shot and the Chants soon loaded the bases, Lee recorded her second strikeout and Lauren Lindsey rushed to catch a popup to decide the game.
