Softball Falls 6-0 in Series Opener Against Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C.-Coastal Carolina (22-15, 4-6 Sun Belt) held Southern Miss (16-19, 4-6 Sun Belt) scoreless Friday night at St. John Stadium to take the first game of the series 6-0.
The Chanticleers outhit Southern Miss 11 to 4 in the contest, plating all six of its runs in scoring spurts in the second and sixth innings.
Both teams were scoreless after two innings, but Coastal's Iyanla De Jesus struck first with a two-RBI single in the second. The Golden Eagles attempted to cut into the deficit, but the Chanticleers added late insurance in the sixth inning, adding four runs on five hits to decide the game.
Coastal Carolina's starting pitcher Raelee Brabham threw a complete game with eight strikeouts, earning her 16th win of the season. Southern Miss starter Loganne Stepp received the loss. Stepp threw for over two innings, allowing four hits and two runs while fanning two batters.
BrookLynn White pitched in relief for Stepp, entering in the third inning with bases loaded. The freshman pitcher left three Chants stranded in the frame with a strikeout-one of her two strikeouts in the match.
Graduate student catcher Hannah Borden recorded two hits early in the game with singles in the first and third innings. Borden increased her season total to 46 hits, tying a career-high for most hits in a season.
Carlee Durham and Shelby Allen also earned hits for the Golden Eagles in the match.
