Late Sixth Inning Home Run Lifts Texas State Past Southern Miss Sunday

HATTIESBURG, Miss.-Southern Miss Softball (21-26, 9-12 Sun Belt) dropped its series finale against No. 24 Texas State, as the Bobcats took the series with a 4-3 victory Sunday.
After being tied through four innings, Texas State's Piper Randolph launched a solo home run to give the Bobcats the advantage it needed to win the series. Despite being outhit seven to four in the match, the Bobcats batted in all of its runs with three home runs.
The Golden Eagles also tallied all of its runs in the third inning with a three-run homer from graduate student catcher Hannah Borden, her 17th home run of the season and final career home run at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
Starting pitcher Holly Craft held the Bobcats scoreless through the first three innings, but Sara Vanderford kickstarted Texas State's offense with a solo home run, setting the program's all-time home run record. JJ Smith later followed with a two-run shot to tie the game.
Jana Lee relieved Craft, ending her final home appearance of the season through three innings with three hits, three runs and one walk allowed with a strikeout.Â
Lee retired the side in order in the fifth, to which Texas State reliever Madison Azua did the same. Randolph hit a solo home run, but Lee and the Golden Eagles' defense prevented any more hits for the remainder of the game.
Southern Miss fought to even the game as Kinsley Gordon and Mikaila Fox hit two singles in the bottom of the frame, but both runners were stranded with a line out to right field. Azua retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh, earning her eighth win of the season, while Lee received the loss.
With her home run in the third inning, Borden also surpassed Megan Hill's record of 205 hits, claiming sole possession for the second most hits in program history. Senior Lauren Lindsey led the team with two hits, both singles coming in consecutive appearances at the plate.
Southern Miss celebrated five seniors on Senior Day: Borden, Lindsey, Maria Smith, Caroline Worrell and KK Agner.
The Golden Eagles finish their 2024 home slate with a 10-6 record, marking the third consecutive season with a .500 or better standing at the Southern Miss Softball Complex, the longest streak since 2008-2010.
