Softball Falls to Sixth Inning Comeback from from South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala.-Southern Miss Softball (21-27, 9-13 Sun Belt) fell 5-4 in Thursday's series opener against South Alabama (30-16-1, 15-7 Sun Belt), as the Jaguars took command with a late run in the sixth inning.
While Southern Miss led for the majority of the match, South Alabama loaded the bases with one out after consecutive singles and a walk. Trailing by one entering the inning, an RBI single tied the match and then an RBI groundout gave the Jaguars a late lead. A combined effort from South Alabama starter Olivia Lackie and Tori Miller cemented the Jaguars' victory.
Lackie earned her 21st win of the season, while Miller earned her first save of the season for her appearance in the seventh. Southern Miss relief pitcher Loganne Stepp received the loss.
The Golden Eagles jumped to an early start to take control with a leadoff solo home run from graduate student catcher Hannah Borden, her 18th home run of the season. The play marked Borden's 50th career home run and her 60th hit of the season.
Jana Lee added to Southern Miss' tally with an RBI single in the third before the Jaguars tied the match in the following frame with a two-RBI double from Olivia Branstetter.
South Alabama claimed the lead for the first time of the night in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double from Amity White, bringing in Loganne Stepp.Â
Starting pitcher Holly Craft finished her day with three hits, two earned runs and three walks allowed in three innings pitched.
After South Alabama walked Borden in the fifth, Lee hit her fifth home run of the season on a two-run shot to regain the lead for Southern Miss. Stepp retired the side in order to end the fifth.
After a popup, South Alabama loaded the bases with one out and then seized the lead again with two runs before Lackie and Miller retired the side in order to take the series opener.
Lee led the team with two hits and three RBI, her first multi-hit game since April 7 and her eighth multi-hit game of the season.
