Women's Tennis Upsets Arkansas State at SBC Championships

Rome, Ga. – The Southern Miss (5-14, 0-10 Sun Belt) women's tennis team topped No. 12 Arkansas State (8-15, 2-9 Sun Belt) 4-3 on Wednesday morning to advance to the second round of the Sun Belt Championships.
The Golden Eagles took an early lead in doubles action as Hannah Chambers and Alyssa Richter and Suhana Das and Zenn Lim both captured wins. Das and Lim started with a 6-4 win over Abigail Thurmer and Anna Grigorova on court two, while Richter and Chambers won 7-6 (7-1) on court one against Yasmine Humbert and Sarah Millard.
Singles action started off with Arkansas State capturing a win on court two as Chambers fell to Humbert in straight sets. Richter followed on court one as she cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win to make it a 2-1 in favor of the Golden Eagles. Arkansas State rolled ahead to claim the next two games on both court five and court three.
Down 3-2, Southern Miss stormed back to win on courts four and six. Malannia Vashkevich took her match 6-3, 6-4, while Lim clinched the match for Southern Miss in a 6-4, 6-1 decision.
The Golden Eagles will now play No. 5 Coastal Carolina on Thursday morning at 9 a.m. CST. The win today was Southern Miss' first postseason win since the 2016 season.
