ROME, Ga. – Coastal Carolina (14-8) topped the Southern Miss (5-14) women's tennis team 4-0 on Thursday morning at the SBC Championships in Rome, Ga. The season-ending loss against fifth-seeded Coastal Carolina comes only a day after the Golden Eagles beat Arkansas State to pick up their first postseason win in eight years.
Suhana Das and Zenn Lim quickly put Southern Miss in a good spot in doubles play with a 6-4 win on court two. All the Golden Eagles had to do was win one other doubles match, but to the Chanticleers' credit, they tied it at one-all with a win over Angelina Blinova and Malannia Vashkevich. The doubles point came down to Alyssa Richter and Hannah Chambers on the top court. The two took Anna Babayan and Jesse Hollins to a tiebreaker set but were unable to win and fell 7-6 (8-6).
Coastal Carolina carried its momentum into singles action as it swept three matches to secure the second-round win. Das fell on court three, which put Southern Miss down 2-0. Blinova and Vashkevich also dropped their matches in straight sets as the Chanticleers picked up their 14th win this season.
The Chanticleers will face No. 4 South Alabama on Friday morning in the quarterfinal round.
