HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Seniors Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) and Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) shot a 70 and 71, respectively, to help Southern Miss to a fourth-place tie after the second day of the Sun Belt Conference Championships in Madison, Miss.
The event, being held at the par 72, 7,190-yard Annandale Golf Club, has one round of stroke play left Wednesday, before the top four teams advance to match play to determine a team champion Thursday.
"Our guys showed some maturity and toughness throughout today's round," said Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher. "Having our two super seniors, Pat and Robbie, step up and perform to an elite level is great for our team. Those two have been staples in our lineup for years and they expect to play well when they tee it up."
Latter enjoyed the Golden Eagles' lowest round of the day and has a two-day total of 145 that puts him in eighth place with 18 holes remaining. Rattanayanon gave the Golden Eagles a boost late in his round by shooting birdies over his final three holes to total of 146 and a ninth-place tie.
Junior Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) added a second-round 73 to enjoy a 148 total, which puts him in a 19th-place tie. Senior Bennett Ruby (Waterloo, Ontario) added a 76 for a 152 total and a 40th-place tie, while freshman Supakorn Amornchaichan (Pattaya City, Thailand) is in a 53rd-place tie with a second-round 78 for a 154 total.
The Golden Eagles shot a second-round 290, which gives them a 36-hole total score of 591 and in a fourth-place tie with Troy. Arkansas State leads with a two-day score of 569, followed by ULM at 586 and Marshall at 589.
Brescher expects the final day of stroke play to be an exciting one.
"Tomorrow will be a drama filled day," said Brescher. "We know and expect it. However, our goal is to get hot and separate from the pack and punch our ticket to match play."
The third and final round of stroke play begins at 8:30 a.m. CT on Wednesday and will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and live scored via Golfstat.
