HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Seniors Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) and Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand), along with junior Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.), helped Southern Miss jump out to a fifth-place tie after each fired a 75 during the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Championships Monday at the Annandale Golf Club in Madison, Miss.
Playing at the par 72, 7,190-yard course, the trio of Golden Eagles each hold a 19th-place tie, while teammates Bennett Ruby, a senior from Waterloo, Ontario, and Supakorn Amornchaichan, a freshman from Pattaya City, Thailand, both added a 76 to sit in a 31st-place tie.
"Being in 5th after round one is certainly not a bad spot to be," said Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher. "Honestly, we did not play all that well today. The greens were receptive to approach shots. Playing the ball down in soft fairways made it difficult to hit greens. However, the stroke play portion is just like a qualifier. We just need to get in the top four and create separation. Once you get to match play, it is anyone's ballgame."
The Golden Eagles fired a team-round of 301, 13-over-par, and trail leader Arkansas State, who shot an even-par 288. Troy holds second place with a 297, followed by both Marshall and ULM, who each shot a 299. Along with Southern Miss, Georgia Southern and Louisiana each fired a 301.
All three rounds of stroke play, along with Thursday's semifinal and championship matches, will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and live scored via Golfstat.
