HATTIESBURG, Miss.-Southern Miss Softball (20-20, 8-7 Sun Belt) earned its first home conference series sweep in the Sun Belt, closing the weekend against Georgia State (10-31, 1-14 Sun Belt) with a 4-1 victory Sunday.
The Golden Eagles allowed just one run through three games this weekend, leading the program to its first series sweep at home since the 2019 season.
Southern Miss designated player and pitcher Jana Lee threw her second complete game of the series, allowing eight hits, three walks and just one earned run with two strikeouts. Lee recorded her second win of the weekend and team-high eighth win of the season.
Offensively, the Golden Eagles matched the Panthers with eight hits and plated all four of its runs from two home run shots by Hannah Borden and Lauren Lindsey.
Borden led the team with three hits, reaching a career milestone of 200 hits, a mark only two other Golden Eagles in program history have reached: Megan Hill and Tata Davis.
After Lee escaped a jam in the second inning with bases loaded to keep the match scoreless, Southern Miss developed quick momentum at-bat in the third. Shelby Allen started the frame with a double, bringing the Golden Eagles back to the top of the order.
Borden then launched a ball out of the park on a two-run shot for her 13th home run of the season, giving Southern Miss a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers responded in the top of the fourth, getting two runners on base with a pair of singles. Payton Nicholson scored Georgia State's first and only run of the series with a sacrifice fly, before Lee ended the frame with a strikeout.
While Southern Miss could not convert from two hits in the fourth, Lindsey delivered her second home run of the season on another two-run shot to give the team its final 4-1 lead.
The Panthers produced three hits in the top of the seventh in an attempt to cut the deficit, but a final ground out to second base ended the match.
