Softball Blanks Georgia State in Series Opener

HATTIESBURG, Miss.-Southern Miss Softball (18-20, 6-7 Sun Belt) earned its first shutout of the season in its series opener against Georgia State (10-29, 1-12 Sun Belt) Friday night at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.

After four scoreless innings, the Golden Eagles found a rhythm in the bottom of the fifth, plating five runs from four hits. Southern Miss' productive inning lifted the team to a 6-0 victory for the first shutout since April 14, 2023, at ULM.

Junior pitcher and designated player Jana Lee earned her seventh win, throwing a complete game shutout. The Albany, Ga. native allowed six hits with no runs or walks allowed with three strikeouts.

Despite being outhit six to five in the game, Southern Miss converted its opportunities in the fifth inning. Kinsley Gordon earned the team's first hit of the game with a double, her sixth of the season. After Maddie Weeks drew a walk, pinch hitter Lauren Lindsey batted in Southern Miss' first run with an RBI single, starting a chain of base hits for the Golden Eagles.

Returning to the top of the order, Hannah Borden followed with a two-RBI double sent down the left-field line. At the second spot, Jana Lee capitalized with her fourth home run of the season, blasting a two-run shot over centerfield to grow Southern Miss' lead to 5-0.

Reaching home plate on the play, Borden became just the tenth Golden Eagle in program history with 100 runs scored.

While Georgia State earned two hits in the following frame, both runners were stranded, allowing Southern Miss to add insurance.

Maria Smith led off the bottom of the sixth with a single, and shortly, the Golden Eagles loaded the bases with one out after Mikaila Fox drew a walk. Maddie Weeks earned an RBI groundout to send Smith home and add a final run for the Golden Eagles.

Lee returned in the circle to close the game, retiring the side in order, including a swinging strikeout.
